Brewing Coffee at Home (Without the Fancy Stuff)
You don’t need a fancy setup to enjoy great coffee—just fresh beans, a few simple tools, and a little fine-tuning to find your favorite cup. From our family to your kitchen, here are a few easy ways to brew a better cup, right at home.
We put this guide together to help you get the most out of your Landgren Bros coffee—whether you’re brewing it in a French press, pour-over, or drip pot on the kitchen counter. No fluff, just real tips that work.
Start with the Basics
-
Fresh Beans Matter
We roast every batch fresh in Dickson, TN. Coffee hits peak flavor about 3–7 days after roasting. That’s your window for the good stuff.
-
Whole bean > pre-ground.
Grind right before you brew. A burr grinder makes a big difference (we like Baratza Encore or anything hand-crank if you’re on a budget)
-
Use good water.
Filtered water = better coffee. Tap water can mess with flavor, especially if it’s treated or high in minerals.
-
Nail your ratios.
We recommend a 1:16 ratio (that’s 1 gram of coffee for every 16 grams of water). For an 8oz cup, that’s about 15g of coffee (3 tablespoons) to 250g of water.
-
Get your temp right.
Too hot burns the coffee. Too cool, and it tastes flat. Aim for water around 200°F. Just off the boil is perfect.

POUR OVER
What You’ll Need:
- Fresh Landgren Bros. medium-fine ground coffee
- Hario V60 or similar pour over dripper
- Paper filter
- Gooseneck kettle
- Mug or carafe
- Digital scale
- Timer
Step-by-Step:
- Rinse & Warm – Place filter in dripper over your mug. Rinse with hot water to eliminate paper taste and preheat your gear. Discard rinse water.
- Add Coffee – Use a 1:16 ratio (e.g. 20g coffee to 320g water).
- Bloom – Start timer. Pour ~40g of hot water (200°F) to saturate the grounds. Let bloom for 30–45 seconds.
- Pour Slowly – In controlled spirals, pour remaining water in stages. Avoid pouring on the edges of the filter.
- Finish & Enjoy – Total brew time: 2.5 to 3.5 minutes. Sip slowly and savor the clarity.
Brew Tip: Try a slightly finer grind than drip coffee, and aim for a steady pour—no rush. Your cup will thank you.

DRIP COFFEE MAKER
What You’ll Need:
- Fresh Landgren Bros. medium-ground coffee
- Your favorite drip coffee machine
- Clean water (filtered if possible)
- Coffee filter
Step-by-Step:
- Use Fresh Grounds – Use about 1:15 ratio (e.g. 60g for a full 10-cup pot).
- Filter Prep – Rinse your paper filter with hot water to reduce paper taste.
- Water Quality – Use cold, filtered water in the reservoir.
- Let It Brew – Start your machine and let it do its thing.
- Serve & Store – Pour immediately. If not drinking all at once, move to a thermal carafe.
Brew Tip: Clean your coffee maker regularly—old oils and minerals can dull your brew’s brightness.

FRENCH PRESS
What You’ll Need:
- Fresh Landgren Bros. coarse-ground coffee
- French press (8-cup or 34 oz)
- Hot water (just off boil, ~200°F)
- Wooden spoon or stir stick
- Timer
Step-by-Step:
- Preheat your French press with hot water, then discard.
- Add Coffee – Use 1:15 ratio (e.g. 30g coffee to 450g water).
- Bloom – Pour just enough hot water to wet the grounds. Let it bloom for 30 seconds.
- Pour & Stir – Slowly add remaining water. Stir gently.
- Steep – Place the lid on and steep for 4 minutes.
- Press & Pour – Press down gently. Serve immediately and savor.
- Brew Tip: Don’t let it sit too long after pressing—it can over-extract and turn bitter. Pour into a carafe if you’re sipping slowly.
